September and October

Autumn on this coast

Chanterelles, lingonberries, and sea buckthorn are the autumn fruit of this coast. Chanterelles grow with spruce and pine. Lingonberries grow on dry pine heath. Sea buckthorn grows on the shore. Allemansrätten lets you pick them for your own use. The woods begin a short walk inland.

What grows here

Chanterelle, Cantharellus cibarius, grows in mossy mixed forest of spruce, pine, and birch. Lingonberry, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, grows on dry pine heath and on rock. Sea buckthorn, Hippophae rhamnoides, grows on the shore. These are the three the house already names. The week and the wood decide where they fruit.

The right to pick

Allemansrätten is protected in Chapter 2, Article 15 of the Instrument of Government, Regeringsformen. You may walk rural land and pick wild berries, mushrooms, and flowers for your own use, without damage. The rule is inte störa, inte förstöra: do not disturb, do not destroy. The right stops at the private area around a dwelling. It does not allow cutting living trees or branches, or taking birch bark. Native orchids are protected under the Species Protection Ordinance, Artskyddsförordningen, and stay where they are.

The reserve on the island

Smitingen-Härnöklubb nature reserve is on the southeastern headland of Härnön, the island Härnösand stands on. It is a drive from town, not the ground around the house. The reserve regulations allow berries and edible mushrooms for personal use. They forbid taking moss or lichen, breaking off rock, and lighting a fire away from the built hearths.

Moose hunting in 2027

Länsstyrelsen Västernorrland has set moose hunting on registered land in the county for 2027: 1–25 September, a pause from 26 September to 9 October, then 10 October 2027 to 31 January 2028. This sentence is for that season, under the decision that covers 2025–2028. On those dates, stay on marked paths and wear high-visibility orange.
