The train

Härnösand Central is the passenger station, on the Ådalsbanan, which meets the East Coast Line south of Sundsvall. SJ runs the long-distance trains. Some daytime journeys change at Sundsvall Central onto a regional train. An overnight train runs from Stockholm and from Arlanda. Check the current timetable on sj.se for the date you travel. The duration is the one SJ shows that day.

The airport

Sundsvall-Timrå Airport, SDL, is the airport south of Härnösand, in Timrå. Scheduled flights connect it with Stockholm Arlanda. There is no railway station at the airport. The last stretch is by car, and the winter-tire rules below are the ones that apply on that drive.

Winter tires

Transportstyrelsen sets the winter-tire rules for passenger cars.

• From 1 December to 31 March, winter tires are required when the road has snow, ice, slush, or frost. Transportstyrelsen calls that vinterväglag. The police officer on the scene decides whether it applies.
• Studded tires are allowed from 1 October to 15 April. After that they come off, unless winter road conditions are present or expected on the route.
• Non-studded winter tires must show the three-peak mountain snowflake mark. A tire marked only M+S does not qualify. This has applied since 1 December 2024.
• Tread must be at least 3 millimetres when winter road conditions apply.

Inquiries for autumn and winter 2027 are for one private house in Härnösand, set back above the coast. Seven nights minimum. A Zaptec Go 2 charger is already in the house. Inquiries are reviewed personally before dates are confirmed.
